Health Minister Ann Keen unveils new designs for Patient Dignity at the Design Council today.

Following the success of the ‘Design Bugs Out’ initiative, the NHS and Design Council has launched a challenge to ‘Design for Patient Dignity’. In association with Kirton Healthcare, PearsonLloyd has been awarded a commission to focus on patient dignity and privacy issues within Transfer and Mobility.

The result is a collection of products: a poncho, a bay screen and a reclining day chair. These tackle issues such as privacy, comfort, communication and self-control, and can work together or in isolation.

PearsonLloyd has been shortlisted for the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2010 in two categories. PARCS for Bene has been nominated in the Furniture Category and the DBO Commode has been nominated in the Product Category.

Brit Insurance Designs of the Year is the Design Museum’s annual exploration of the most innovative, interesting and forward-looking new work in design of all kinds, from around the world. The exhibition presents around 100 projects which are a selection from those nominated by a group of internationally respected design experts, curators, critics, practitioners and enthusiasts. The nominated designs fall into seven categories - architecture, fashion, furniture, graphics, interactive, product and transport. They can be designed by a practice, team or individual. A winner for each category will be selected by an international jury and one overall winner will be awarded Brit Insurance Design of the Year 2010 at an awards dinner in March.

The exhibition at the Design Museum will run from February 17th – June 6th 2010.

PearsonLloyd will be showcasing the Revolve Light from Bernhardt as part of Central Saint Martins' show, 'This is what we call product design...” Icons from the Product Design course at Central Saint Martins. The showcase will be displayed in the Windows at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design (107 - 109 Charing Cross Road, London, WC2H 0DU), from the 19th to the 27th of September 2009.

The Central Saint Martins Product Design is the oldest course of its kind in the UK. Since 1938 we have produced some of the most important designers in the world, who have subsequently designed some of the most iconic designs in the world. For the first time the college will champion its influential alumni with a window display exhibition on Charing Cross Road.

‘PearsonLloyd has been appointed by the Bath and Northeast Somerset Council'

PearsonLloyd has been appointed by Bath & North East Somerset Council as part of an exciting team of designers to develop elements of its Public Realm and Movement Strategy for Bath City Centre.

This follows the Council’s formal endorsement of the Strategy – entitled ‘Creating the Canvas for Public Life in Bath’ - in May 2009.

The strategy sets out how Bath could become one of the UK’s most walkable cities. It aims to de-clutter and refashion a network of streets and public spaces in the heart of the city using high-quality paving and new street furniture and to make Bath easier to understand, access and move around on foot, by bicycle and public transport.

PearsonLloyd is appointed to design the on-street information products and bus shelters and to develop a design concept for a wider range of bespoke street furniture.

The team also includes City ID as Client Lead Design Advisors, to help develop the strategy and oversee the development of the new city information system and street furniture projects; and fwdesign who will be responsible for the new information and wayfinding strategy for the city.

The Aram Gallery opens in July with a refreshed installation of Prototypes and Experiments - a show where prototypes and experimental designs sourced from both emerging and established designers' studios are exhibited together.

Prototypes and experiments are critical elements in the development process of any new design. The prototype is the manifestation of the design idea on its way to production; experiments are more like steps on the way. The prototype, being part of a process, makes more real an idea that will lead to a final piece, and is not made with the intention of being sold or shown outside the deigner's studio.

This year PearsonLloyd has been invited to exhibit prototypes and rigs used during their design process of cobi chair. A new work chair for the collaborative work environment launched recently for Steelcase Inc .

Design Bugs Out






In September 2008, the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency (PASA) and the Design Council joined forces to launch the ‘Design Bugs Out’ initiative, bringing together teams of researchers, designers and manufacturers to address the issues that will help reduce the incidence and costs estimated at an annual £3 billion of healthcare associated infections - (HCAI’s) - especially MRSA and C-difficile. A team comprising of Kirton Healthcare, PearsonLloyd and the Human-centred Design Insitute (HCDI) at Brunel University were awarded two commissions to tackle the briefs of the hospital commode and patient chair. The result is the DBO Patient Chair and DBO Commode. They will both be showcased in a preview on Tuesday 28 April at the Design Council before going on a national tour of showcase hospitals. ‘Luke Pearson and Tom Lloyd to become Royal Designers for Industry’


Luke Pearson and Tom Lloyd will be one of ‘five of the UK’s best designers’ to become the latest Royal Designers for Industry at an award ceremony held on the 27th of November 2008. Recognised for their outstanding contribution to design, Luke Pearson and Tom Lloyd will join a select group of designers who currently hold the RDI award. The distinction Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) was established by the RSA in 1936 to enhance the status of designers in industry and encourage a high standard of industrial design. Only 200 designers are able to hold the distinction RDI at any one time, there are now 118 RDIs and 53 Honorary RDIs. Members of the Faculty include Jasper Morrison, James Dyson, Vivienne Westwood, Thomas Heatherwick and JoSteelcasean Ive.

‘Design Bugs Out’


PearsonLloyd has been selected in partnership with Kirton Healthcare to redesign a patient chair, and a commode for NHS hospitals in an initiative to help in the fight against MRSA and other healthcare associated infections (HCAI’s). In September, the ‘Design Council and the Design Business Association launched a nationwide search for teams of designers and manufacturers to redesign furniture and equipment to make them easier to keep clean, and so help reduce patients’ exposure to HCAIs. PearsonLloyd/Kirton Healthcare has been selected out of 37 designer/manufacturer teams to develop two of these briefs. As part of the HCAI Technology Innovation Programme by the NHS Purchasing And Supply Agency (NHS PASA), this wide ranging programme, funded by the Department of Health, aims to identify and fast-track the implementation of new technologies and design-led innovations to combat healthcare associated infections. As part of a winning team, PearsonLloyd/Kirton Healthcare will develop working prototypes, which will be taken on a national tour in April 2009, to selected hospitals which are taking part in the ‘HCAI Technology Innovation Programme’.

DBA Awards 2008
PearsonLloyd have won two prestigious DBA awards in collaboration with the Virgin Atlantic in house design team for their Premium Economy Super Seat. The first was a Gold DBA Design Effectiveness Award and the second a DBA Material Innovations Award.



"Working within the constraints of an existing frame, the design team reduced the overall shipset weight of the seat by 70kg. This will result in an annual saving of £136,000 once the seats are installed across the fleet, while the overall design has led to 30%, £200,000 reduction in seat maintenance. Since launch, customer satisfaction levels have increase by 30%, resulting in a significant market share shift which equates to a considerable rise in revenue. Positive passenger feedback has also impacted on staff morale, with industry surveys demonstrating an increase in staff responsiveness and professionalism."

LINK is a new product designed by PearsonLloyd, which was developed in response to a commission by ARPRO to investigate potential new uses of expanded polypropylene within the contract furniture and interiors market. EPP is a lightweight high performance material traditionally used in the packaging and automotive industries. The launch and first installations of LINK will be at Tent London 2007, which runs from 20-23 September at the Truman Brewery in London’s east end. PearsonLloyd have been appointed by Steelcase, the world's leading office furniture manufacturer and workspace designer, to collaborate on a brand new UK headquarters in London dedicated to the future of office environments.

PearsonLloyd have won a NeoCON Gold award for their Coast chair by Bernhardt as well as an Innovation award for their part in Bernhard's Global Edition. We also received a Silver award for Soul by Allermuir.

A new sofa called 'Quilt' will be launched, along with a productionised version of the Polar system. A reversible table and stool to go with the range will also be shown. New finishes for the Miniscus table will be on display.

Fabricacion, Funcion, Formacion. Tom and Luke led a three day design workshop in Santiago de Compostela for the Fundacion Maria Martinez Otero, which promotes learning and development within the furniture industry in Spain. The foundation is linked to PearsonLloyd’s Spanish client Martinez Otero.

PearsonLloyd will be launching new furniture for Allermuir at Prima in London. The Allermuir stand is F5 on the ground floor. New 'Conic' tub chairs will be on display at the 'One to one' Business Zone on the first floor balcony.

Virgin Atlantic Airways have released the first information about the recent re-design of their Economy and Premium Economy seats by PearsonLloyd. Seats have just completed successful user trials within the Virgin fleet, and the first full installation of the new products will be completed in early summer. More later.
